Role – Business Development Manager At Hi-Tech Steels Services Ltd.
In 1992 Hi-Tech Steel Services was founded and I joined the business as a Sales Executive based at our first north-east service centre, in Middlesbrough.
By 1993 the business first became quality approved and I added Quality Management to my role description.
In 1996 we moved to larger premises, with new equipment, in Newton Aycliffe. Business continued to grow and I became Divisional General Manager. Productivity, excellent quality control , business development and continuous improvement were all essential. Our growing list clients needed extremely high service levels. The headcount increased from 15 to 40. I added recruitment, people development and motivation to my list of skills with the aid of vocational and external training. My team were responsible for production and transport planning, customer service and reducing costs.
In 2007 I became a Divisional Director, reporting the plant performance to the board. The successful cost saving model that we had developed was later applied at our other, larger service centre in Merseyside, and eventually my role became that of Operations Director, overseeing both plants.
In 2013, after a prolonged period of difficult trade and the shrinkage of the north-east market we found both plants had surplus capacity. The large range of equipment, increased efficiency and central location meant that we could answer the needs of all of our customers from our larger Merseyside plant, which lead to closure in Aycliffe, after a major restructure. However, we still provide 1st class service nationwide and several of our largest customers are in the north-east. The high standards we have always valued were uninterrupted during this period.
Hence, my current role. I now enjoy the position of Business Development Manager based in our north-east sales office, though I do cover all areas of the country. I work closely with important contractual accounts. My broad experience in the industry invaluable and our customers count on it.
